A straight line is how a family picture falls apart. These Family Photo Poses keep parents and kids touching, staggered, or walking, so the group looks like a family rather than a class photo.
Use The Hand-in-Hand Walk or The Sky-High Lift when a toddler will not stand on a mark. The Picnic Blanket Circle and The Couch Cuddle Pile sit everyone down. The Staggered Steps is the one to pull out when grandparents arrive and you suddenly have six or eight people. The Kitchen Bake-Off and The Lazy Morning Bed stay indoors.
Give the group one sentence, then shoot while they are still doing it. If a gap opens between bodies, the flatter tip on the pose is the fix: a smaller step, a bent knee, or heads at different heights. Tallest in the back is a starting point, not a rule, once someone is sitting or being held.

Avoid a straight line. Put the parents close enough that their shoulders overlap and give each child a place that changes the height: one held, one in front, or both on a picnic blanket. The Hand-in-Hand Walk and The Tight Huddle Hug are the simplest family of four setups in this set.
The Staggered Steps puts people on different treads so heads form a loose triangle instead of a row. On the ground, The Picnic Blanket Circle sits adults on one hip with the youngest in the middle. Both keep knees and feet in the frame, so use a full-length camera position.
Give the toddler a job: walk, swing hands, or be lifted. The Sky-High Lift and The Hand-in-Hand Walk burn off the wiggles. If they will only sit, use the picnic blanket and let them stay in the middle. Shoot several frames. The honest one is rarely the first.
Read the "Say this" line on the pose and then stop talking. A second instruction makes people reset their faces. Movement lines (walk, squeeze, laugh) work better than "smile at the camera."
